National Indigenous History Month
Thursday, June 1, 2023
As we embark upon the month of June, we are reminded of the significance of National Indigenous History Month and the day set aside to honour and celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
National Indigenous History Month serves as a reminder of the long and storied history of Indigenous communities in our country, which predates colonization by thousands of years. It is an opportunity for all Canadians, including AJC members, to deepen our understanding, foster dialogue, and acknowledge the immense resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of Indigenous peoples.
As a federal union, we have a responsibility to demonstrate our unwavering support for Indigenous rights, self-determination, and the pursuit of equitable opportunities for all. Throughout this month, let us engage in meaningful conversations, educate ourselves about the lived experiences and struggles faced by Indigenous communities, and recognize the ongoing journey towards truth, justice, and reconciliation. It is crucial that we recognize and reflect upon the lasting impacts of colonial policies, including the residential school system, which have caused immense harm to generations of Indigenous children and their families.
In observing National Indigenous History Month, we encourage members to participate in various educational initiatives, events, and workshops that focus on Indigenous history, culture, and contemporary issues. Seek out opportunities to engage with Indigenous artists, storytellers, elders, and knowledge keepers who generously share their wisdom and traditions. Educate yourselves about the rich diversity of Indigenous cultures and the ongoing efforts towards preserving their languages, ceremonies, and sacred practices.
Let us also remember that National Indigenous History Month is not merely a month of commemoration, but a reminder of the importance of ongoing advocacy and support for the rights and well-being of Indigenous peoples throughout the year. By amplifying Indigenous voices, challenging systemic injustices, and embracing the principles of inclusivity and equality, we can contribute to the collective journey towards reconciliation.
We still have much work to do towards truth and reconciliation with the Indigenous and First Nations Peoples of this land.
In conclusion, let us celebrate National Indigenous History Month together with genuine humility and a commitment to learn, grow, and act. By working together, we can create a brighter future that embraces the richness and wisdom of Indigenous cultures and paves the way for a more inclusive and equitable society.
In solidarity,
David McNairn, AJC President
