Law Society Dues
Thursday, October 24, 2024
We want to bring to your attention an important and emerging issue regarding the payment of Law Society dues. PPSC has recently informed us that it will no longer pay Law Society fees directly. Members are now required to pay their dues individually and then request reimbursement. This change was implemented without any advance notice or consultation with the AJC. It stems from the Law Society of Ontario’s decision to no longer allow employers to pay law society fees on behalf of their employees, requiring instead that each LSO member pay their dues personally through the lawyer portal of the LSO website.
We understand that this shift creates unnecessary administrative burdens and financial strain for many of our members, especially new calls and members of equity groups. The AJC does not accept the PPSC position that this should be imposed upon all non-LSO lawyers. We are actively advocating on your behalf with both the Employer and the Law Society to find workable solutions. We are also in communication with our provincial association counterparts to coordinate our efforts and strengthen our advocacy.
The Employer’s decision will not go unchallenged. We will keep you informed of any developments and our progress on this matter. Should you have any immediate concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Labour Relations team.
