COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

The AJC is currently seeking a Communications Officer who is interested in working in a dynamic, small team setting that promotes the value and worth of federal public service lawyers and seeks to improve their working conditions.

The Association of Justice Counsel (AJC) is the bargaining agent for over 3,500 lawyers who work for the Government of Canada, including counsel with the Department of Justice, Public Prosecution Service of Canada, and numerous federal agencies. ABOUT THE POSITION

 

Reporting to the Director of Advocacy & Bargaining, the Communications Officer operationalizes the AJC’s communication strategies and initiatives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Writes and edits a broad range of communication materials like press releases, member communiqués, newsletters, briefs and fact sheets.
  2. Works with the Director of Advocacy & Bargaining, the Executive Director, Vice- President Communication, President and other AJC colleagues to develop materials for effective communication and engagement with stakeholders including, AJC membership, our allies, media and the general public.
  3. Supports the planning, development and implementation of internal and external advocacy and communications strategies, programs, and initiatives.
  4. Works on and supports the production and delivery of the AJC’s annual reports, briefs, FAQs, scripts, talking points, etc.
  5. Identifies and maintains a catalogue of target media outlets and key contacts by subject matter.
  1. Collects, catalogues, and analyzes current affairs, including media reports and government actions, that are of interest to the AJC.
  2. Maintains the AJC website as well as uploads and updates its content.
  3. Coordinates and performs quality control of third-party translation services.
  4. Develops communications products that facilitate member engagement, retention and recruitment.

 

STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

  1. College diploma or undergraduate degree in communications, marketing or any related discipline.
  2. Minimum 4 years of experience in communications, or public relations and research to senior executives.
  3. Bilingualism (French/English) is essential.
  4. Experience working in a union considered an asset.
  5. Equivalent combinations of education and/or experience are considered.

 

DECISION MAKING (COMPLEXITY)

 

  1. Decisions made by this position related in large part of the performance of work.
  2. Some tasks are repetitive however other tasks are somewhat diversified, involving the manipulation of several variables within a changing environment.
  3. General instructions are often provided.
  4. This position develops communications policies and procedures for the organization.
  5. Requires considerable judgement.

 

MANAGEMENT AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Coordinate media training for the President.
  2. Manages the government and media relations service providers.
  1. No direct reports.

 

INDEPENDENCE OF ACTION

 

  1. The Communications Officer works independently in the completion of day-to-day duties.
  2. General precedents and practices are available, however developing tools, protocols and templates that guide the organization for the communications function is common.
  3. Works under general direction and is guided by broad policies and general objectives.
  4. Must show some original and independent/thinking in developing and/or adapting methods to the task at hand.

 

CONTACTS

 

Requires the ability to build and maintain productive relationships and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders.

 

Internal:

  • Internal contacts include the Director of Advocacy & Bargaining, President, the Executive Director, Vice-President Communications, Communications Committee, Membership Committee and all staff at AJC.

 

External:

  • External contacts include: press, offices of federally elected officials, contractors, the public via social media.
  • May deal with demanding interpersonal situations.

 

Physical Environment:

  • Standard office environment.

 

Stress Environment:

  • Work is fast-paced, timelines are tight and at times tasks are performed under pressure.
  • Stress dealing with sensitive communications matters.

  • Sustained concentration is required.

 

 

COMPENSATION AND OTHER BENEFITS

 

  1. COMPETITIVE SALARY COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENCE: $82,080.00 to $118,116.00
  2. GROUP BENEFITS: Health, Dental, Life, Disability
  3. PENSION PLAN: CAAT
  4. VACATION: 4 weeks/year to start in addition to December holiday season and other paid leave
  5. JOB TERM: Indeterminate Full-time (35 hours per week)
