Statement of Support for Legal Aid System in Alberta
Friday, July 5, 2024
The Association of Justice Counsel (AJC) stands in unwavering support of Legal Aid Alberta amidst its current conflict with the provincial government. The recent decision by Legal Aid Alberta to suspend services due to a contract dispute has highlighted significant issues in the justice system that require urgent attention. Proper funding of legal aid services is fundamental to ensuring access to justice for all.
Legal Aid is a cornerstone of our justice system, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of financial status, have access to legal representation. This is fundamental to upholding the principles of fairness and equality before the law. The suspension of these services not only jeopardizes the rights of those in need but also places immense pressure on the entire judicial system.
We urge the provincial government to engage in meaningful consultation and provide adequate funding to Legal Aid Alberta. Proper funding and support are critical to maintaining the integrity of our justice system and ensuring that legal aid services can continue to function effectively.
The AJC’s members, including federal Crown counsel in Alberta, will be impacted should Legal Aid Alberta’s services be suspended. We will remain engaged in understanding how these changes will impact our members, and the system in which we work.
The AJC expresses its solidarity with the legal professionals and clients affected by this situation. We call upon the government to resolve this dispute swiftly and prioritize the sustainability of legal aid services for the benefit of all Albertans.
